Biten

When I can, I try and give other artists opportunities because I know how hard it is to get into the scene....especially as a woman. But over the years I've met people who are manipulative and don't have their own true identities and are content to be "biters" or in other words, people who will ride off what you created for yourself - or people who imitate, duplicate, you get the idea. And then get credit for it! eh!!!! What the....

This crap leaves me fuming. Really, you can probably see the smoke billowing from my head. I just don't understand why anyone would ever, ever, ever want to do this. Then people say to me, imitation is a form fo flattery...HA! well, you can keep your flattery. I don't want it or need it. Matter of fact, stay far, far away from me with that crap. It's sort of like "single white female"...yikes!

ai't as one who is fond of your art, i must say i am a bit disappointed in your reasoning. i am wary of people who come out and claim that their style is being copied. first and foremost, we are all copying someone. if you are a hip hop artist, unless you are a pioneer of hip hop, then you are copying someone else. that is why we have music, art etc classified into different genres. now, whatever genre you choose to pursue you are copying, borrowing someone's style or following in someone else's footsteps unless you are a pioneer of that type of art. every artist, great or otherwise is influenced by a predecessor and it is quite easy to hear the influence in thier art.another huge mistake is that just because an artist has gained more public exposure than oanother, they often calim to own a style when the same stle is heard. art is universal and to be shared. and while i am not advocating for the sampling craze that is going on, all am saying is that when you hear or see your influence in someone else's performance, suck it up. you also have another's influence in yours. sometimes the follower is able to perfect an art even better than the predecessor. that is the beauty of art - it evolves. and thank god it does, or else we would not have reggaeton, hip hop, spoken word, dancehall and all other kinds of art and music that evolved from previous genres.

but here's the problem - it's not someone who is copying my style - I know we are influenced without even knowing it. That's not the problem at all. This person I am speaking of is not someone who is trying to duplicate what I do artistically.

It has to do with mistaken identity and riding off of my identity. Using what I have created to benefit them. This is wrong, no matter what.

I have created a name for myself. It has taken many years to do this and for someone else to swoop in and ride off of a name is just wrong.

As an artist, you create your own name. And you work hard and you do your thing and people start to recognize.

If you knew the entire story you would understand. And this person has even said, "I'm starting to not be able to tell the difference between the 2 of us." what? And saying that people call her by name and think that she is me. If you knew the whole story your jaw would drop to the floor. I garantee it.

and even the pioneers of hip hop were copying someone.

Mother goose! LOL - and others.

But I will say, that I don't think that it's copying. I think that you are influenced. There are people who literally try and copy what someone else has done. For me, this is not their own truse expression. I think when you are using your own expression you expand on what you have been influences by - you don't merely imitate it.

and one more thing...why does everybody have to post as anonymous on here. It's a little unfair because I don't even know if you'll come back to check my response.

boooo! to the anonymous. ;)

thanks for the comment. And it's nice to know that other's can see what's up. Sometimes I'm wondering if I'm crazy.
I wasn't trying to put the person OUT THERE to be known, which is why I was so vague and I can also see how it could be misunderstood - but obviously you know who it is. And I have experienced many, many incidents over the past 5 years with her where she has said or done questionable things and I honestly believe it is done out of spite. I don't do what I do out of spite...ever. I do it because this is all I have and all I have to give. I love it more than anything. And I have worked long and hard to get where I am. That's why it is so frustrating.
